The 5A South Conference tipped off with a clash of styles as the Hot Springs Trojans visited the Sheridan Yellowjackets in a game defined by strategic shifts and standout performances. When the final buzzer sounded, it was Hot Springs walking away with a 57-45 victory, thanks to a masterclass in defensive adjustments and offensive cohesion.

Fast-Paced First Quarter Sets the Tone

The first quarter showcased an offensive explosion. The Trojans came out firing with senior Jai Hayes sinking a three-pointer off an assist from LaBraun Christon on their opening possession. Sheridan responded swiftly, with Gavin Hobson feeding Colton Bickford for a quick two points. The Yellowjackets briefly held a 4-3 lead, their only advantage of the game, before Hot Springs took control. Hayes, along with junior Jaeir Hardwell, combined to go 4-of-5 from beyond the arc, propelling the Trojans to a double-digit lead late in the quarter. However, Sheridan’s Noah Romine kept his team within striking distance, draining three of four attempts from three-point range. The first frame closed with Hot Springs clinging to a slim 21-20 advantage.

Defensive Adjustments Define the Second Quarter

The game slowed in the second quarter, turning into a defensive slog. Both teams committed seven turnovers, and scoring was sparse in the first two minutes. The Trojans outpaced the Yellowjackets 10-5 in the quarter, with Hayes accounting for eight of those points, including key second-chance buckets off offensive rebounds. Hot Springs’ decision to focus on shutting down Romine proved pivotal; after his first-quarter fireworks, he managed just one point in the second. At halftime, Hot Springs led 31-25.

Trojans coaching staff knew they had to lock in on Romine. He’s a dangerous shooter, and limiting his opportunities was crucial if Hot Springs wanted the win.

Sheridan Fights Back in the Third Quarter

Sheridan battled to close the gap in the third, pulling within four points briefly and staying within five on multiple occasions. Contributions from seniors Logan Ward and Gavin Hobson, who each hit a three-pointer, kept the Yellowjackets competitive. But Hot Springs’ balanced attack, featuring scoring from Anthony Lambert, Elijah Reed, Christon, and Hayes, ensured they maintained their lead. The Trojans entered the final quarter ahead 46-39.

Trojans Pull Away in the Fourth

Hot Springs began the fourth quarter with a momentum-building sequence: Reed grabbed a defensive rebound and found freshman Daron Hicks streaking down the court for an easy layup to push the lead to double digits. A scoring drought followed, but by the time Sheridan’s Jace Gatlin managed to score from the free-throw line, the Trojans had already built a comfortable cushion. Hayes and Christon continued to control the pace, setting up teammates and keeping Sheridan’s offense at bay.

Hayes, who finished with 21 points, 9 rebounds, 4 assists, and 3 steals, was the game’s clear MVP. Romine led Sheridan with 16 points, but the Yellowjackets struggled to find consistent offense after his early success.

Ultimately, Hot Springs executed their game plan well. They trusted each other and continue to show their capabilities as a team. However, don't count the Yellowjackets out. They have a solid foundation, great shooters, great rebounders, and they are hungry for competition.

The Trojans’ ability to adjust defensively and exploit opportunities offensively was the defining factor. Their strategy of neutralizing Romine after his explosive start disrupted Sheridan’s rhythm, and their balanced scoring ensured the victory.

Looking Ahead

Sheridan will host Vilonia (5A Central) on Friday, while Hot Springs travels to Malvern for a non-conference test against the 4A-5S Leopards.
