The Lakeside Lady Rams flexed their conference dominance on their home court Thursday night, defeating the Hot Springs Lady Trojans 58-26 in a 5A South matchup. With the victory, Lakeside improved to 7-4 overall and 3-0 in conference play, solidifying their position as a team to beat. Meanwhile, Hot Springs continues their rebuilding journey, falling to 0-10 on the season and 0-2 in conference.

Lakeside’s Commanding Start

Despite being shorthanded due to suspensions following an altercation earlier in the week, the Lady Rams wasted no time asserting themselves. By halftime, they led 25-8, thanks in large part to standout Payton Futch. Futch dominated both ends of the court, tallying 17 points, 8 rebounds, 4 steals, and an assist in the first half. Sophomore star McKenzie Williams complemented Futch’s effort with 7 points, 7 boards, and a steal, providing a formidable one-two punch.

Hot Springs struggled to find offensive rhythm early on. Madison Contreras, BethAnn Mullenix, Renee Nduku, and Sa’Mya Sanders each scored two points in the first half, but the team’s high turnover volume and lack of assists highlighted their uphill battle.

Hot Springs Finds a Spark

After halftime, the Lady Trojans showed signs of life, scoring 22 points in the second half, including 14 in the third quarter alone. Sa’Mya Sanders led the charge, finishing with 8 points, 5 rebounds, 2 assists, a steal, and a block. Trinity Stiff also chipped in with six points in the third quarter, and Nduku knocked down a key three-pointer.

However, the Lady Rams’ firepower proved insurmountable. McKenzie Williams exploded in the second half, scoring 17 of her 24 points, including a dominant third quarter that saw her pour in 15 points. Williams also finished the game with 8 rebounds, 3 assists, and 2 steals, showcasing her versatility and relentless energy. Futch continued to lead by example, closing the night with a game-high 29 points, 16 rebounds, 7 steals, and 3 assists.

Postgame Reflections and Recognition

Payton and McKenzie’s ability to take control of the game, even when down key players, speaks volumes about their leadership. It is clear that they’re the heartbeat of the Lady Rams team.

Despite the loss, Hot Springs showed resilience and determination in the second half. It's clear they are a group that is learning and growing each game.

The game also highlighted the impressive work of Lakeside’s student-run broadcast team, LakesideTV. From the camera work to engaging commentary and well-produced replays, the broadcast added a layer of professionalism that enhanced the game-day experience, and was incredibly enjoyable.

Looking Ahead

The Lady Rams now turn their attention to a tournament matchup against Baptist Prep on December 26th, while the Lady Trojans will look to regroup during their next game on January 7th against Lake Hamilton.
